Have you ever looked at a beautiful view, or walked along a stunning beach yet have been so distressed that you haven’t been able to relax, your stomach in knots, tears in your eyes, or simply just distracted?
I have. But I want to tell you today that God is faithful, in this journey called life.
In New Zealand today and I would expect much of the Western world, we have an epidemic of poor mental health. And today, many things are happening in the world that can create distress.
I too have struggled with my mental health in the past, coping in unhelpful ways. That is why I can tell you that there is hope, and God always provides a way. I’m not saying it’s always easy. But God will direct your steps if you look to Him. He wants you to be healthy and whole.
God has been speaking to me this week about His glory, that He wants to encourage His people. I’m often moved by song and “The Heavens Shall Declare” by Geoff Bullock is a wonderful old song to listen to and to worship the Lord.
In the wonderful place where I live, I can not only see beautiful mountains but the sea also. The Nelson and Tasman Bays area is filled with the glory of God’s creation. In Psalm 121 the psalmist says that he lifts his eyes up to the hills- Where does his help come from? And then says My help comes from the Lord maker of heaven and earth. So why does he ask us to look to the mountains? when the Lord dwells within us? I believe because we will be reminded of the glory of God and find comfort in His majesty.
I remember also of other challenges in the Bible, for example, the battle of Amelek, Joshua was out fighting and to be successful Moses had to keep his hands lifted. Of course, he became tired and Aaron and Hur had to lift his hands up for Joshua to achieve the victory. God will bring others alongside us when we need help.
Sometimes God does what I’d call unusual things. Not what I would expect in the natural. But He knows and believe me, we can trust Him.
If you are struggling to trust Him, a good place to start is to tell Him about it. He can take it! The psalms are filled with the expressions of King David’s struggles. Then ask for his help in the situation you are in. Don't be afraid to get more wisdom as well. Reading proverbs is also a great place to find the wisdom of God.
I can encourage you that if you continue to seek God and His wisdom, He will bring you through whatever you are facing.
Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus
